Connecting Recent Graduates with Opportunities in Tech
techNL, in collaboration with the Department of Jobs, Immigration, and Growth (JIG), is launching a Graduate Transition Initiative to support the growth of Newfoundland and Labrador’s technology sector and support recent graduates in building work experience.
This exciting initiative provides local tech and tech-enabled companies with funding, allowing them to hire recent post-secondary graduates. Whether you’re looking to gain experience or grow your team, this program is designed to build meaningful pathways to employment while easing costs and streamlining the hiring process.
Program Snapshot
Program Duration: One year
Wage Subsidy: $33,000 per hire
Additional Support: $8,250 per hire for onboarding and training
Focus Areas: Software Development and Technical Sales
Goal: Long-term retention and workforce growth

Who is Eligible?
Employers
Location & Incorporation

Must be incorporated provincially or federally and registered to do business in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Must maintain a physical office and active business operations in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Company Size

Must have fewer than 250 employees at the time of application.
Sector Alignment
This funding is specifically for tech and tech-enabled companies in Newfoundland and Labrador. Therefore, eligible companies must operate as one of the following:
- A Tech Company: Defined as an incorporated, for-profit company whose primary commercial activity involves the sale of a unique technology-driven software and/or hardware product.
- A Tech-Enabled Company: Defined as an incorporated, for-profit company that utilizes proprietary software and/or hardware in the development, creation, or extraction of a different product or service that it sells to generate revenue
Employment Commitment

Must have the capacity, intention, and a clear plan to transition the graduate into a permanent, full-time role following the completion of the program.

Positions must be net new, meaning the subsidy cannot be used to extend or replace an existing role.
Management & Support Capacity

Must demonstrate the ability to provide adequate onboarding, supervision, mentorship, and professional development opportunities for the graduate.

Must identify a designated supervisor/mentor who will oversee the graduate’s progress.
Compliance & Good Standing

Must be in good standing with provincial and federal regulations (taxes, employment standards, occupational health & safety, etc.).

Must agree to reporting requirements as set out by techNL and the Department of Jobs, Immigration, and Growth (JIG).
- Must be a techNL member in good standing.

Graduates
Residency & Work Authorization
-
Must be legally entitled to work full-time in Newfoundland and Labrador at the time of application.

Must reside in Newfoundland and Labrador.
Education & Training
-
Must have successfully completed (within the past two years) a minimum one-year program at a recognized post-secondary institution or workforce/skills training provider in Newfoundland and Labrador (e.g., Memorial University, College of the North Atlantic, Keyin College, Get Building, or other provincially recognized programs).
Graduate Status
-
Must not currently be enrolled as a full-time student.
Employment Readiness

Must be available to begin full-time employment at the start of the program.

Must demonstrate interest and intent to remain employed in Newfoundland and Labrador’s technology sector.

Eligibility Exclusions

Individuals currently employed in a full-time permanent role in the NL tech sector are not eligible.

Co-op students, interns, or those completing unpaid work placements are not eligible.
Notes & Clarifications

Both employers and graduates must agree to complete required reporting and evaluation forms throughout the program.

techNL and JIG reserve the right to determine final eligibility.

Funding for this initiative has been provided by the Labour Market Development Agreement (LMDA) between the Government of Canada and the Province of Newfoundland and Labrador.
