Compactica Is Changing How Asphalt Compaction Decisions Get Made

With a growing North American footprint, Compactica is bringing real-time execution intelligence and measurable performance reporting to one of construction’s most time-critical operations: asphalt paving.

Compactica is transforming how asphalt paving teams make decisions when it matters most: while the mat is still hot and compaction is still changeable.

Asphalt paving is a time-sensitive operation where outcomes are largely irreversible. Once the material cools, compaction outcomes are locked in. If density targets are missed, the only fix is costly tear-out and repaving.

Despite this, most projects still rely on spot testing methods like nuclear gauges and core samples. These approaches assess less than one percent of the paved surface and often provide results after the window for correction has passed.

Compactica addresses this execution gap.

The company’s system combines rugged, self-installed hardware with cloud-based software to stream compaction performance data from rollers in real time. Operators, foremen, engineers, and owners can see where rolling is effective, where it is falling short, and where action is still possible. Instead of explaining outcomes after the fact, the system helps crews influence them while the work is underway.

But real-time guidance is only part of the shift.

Compactica’s reporting suite automatically converts rolling activity into structured daily and full-project summaries, built around eight core performance metrics. These indicators quantify density compliance, temperature adherence, pass uniformity, rolling efficiency, and risk exposure, giving contractors a clear, defensible view of project health and bonus eligibility.

“Execution is where margins are won or lost,” said Scott Allen, Compactica’s CEO. “By making compaction performance visible and measurable, we help contractors improve profitability while delivering higher-quality infrastructure.”

Delivered as a SaaS platform, Compactica is equipment-agnostic and designed to work across mixed fleets. Contractors install the hardware themselves and subscribe on a per-crew basis, allowing the system to scale with active paving operations rather than capital budgets.

Market traction is building rapidly. Following its focused move into asphalt paving, Compactica secured pilots with several large enterprise contractors in Florida. The speed of adoption reflects a practical reality: in asphalt, performance decisions are made minute by minute, and small improvements can meaningfully affect crew pay, project margins, and pavement lifecycle performance.

While Compactica now operates across the United States and Canada, its roots remain firmly in Newfoundland and Labrador. The company’s engineering-first culture, shaped in St. John’s, has been instrumental in building a system trusted by operators in the field and managers off site.

Compactica’s focus is clear. Not more after-the-fact verification. Not static dashboards. But measurable real time execution, while there is still time to influence the outcome.
