Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
How is my membership category determined?
Your membership category is based on your organization type and employee count, as defined in the membership categories above.
If your organization commercializes proprietary technology as a core part of its business model, it will typically fall under the Tech Company category. Organizations providing professional services that support the tech sector fall under the Service Provider category.
If you are unsure which category applies to your organization, contact Liam@technl.ca.
What is the difference between global and NL employee count?
For Tech Company Membership, annual fees are based on your total global employee count.
For Service Provider and Alliance Partner Membership, fees are based on employees located in Newfoundland and Labrador.
This approach reflects how different organizations engage with and contribute to the local tech ecosystem.
If you are unsure which category applies to your organization, please contact Liam@technl.ca.
I use internal technology — which category applies?
Using internal technology does not automatically place your organization in the Tech Company category.
If your organization develops technology primarily to support internal operations or service delivery, you remain eligible under the Service Provider category.
If your organization actively commercializes or scales proprietary technology as part of its business model, it may qualify for Tech Company Membership.
If you are uncertain, please contact Liam@technl.ca, who can help determine the appropriate category.
How does Sponsored Startup Membership work?
Sponsored Startup Membership is available to qualifying early-stage tech companies with fewer than 10 global employees and under $100,000 in Annual Recurring Revenue (ARR).
Approved memberships:
- • Are valid for 12 months
- • Require annual reapplication
- • Provide full access to core tech company benefits
If a company no longer meets eligibility criteria, it will be placed in the appropriate Tech Company tier at renewal based on global employee count.
When do membership fees apply?
Membership fees are assessed at renewal and are based on your confirmed membership category and employee count at that time.
If your staffing levels or business structure change during the year, we encourage you to contact us to ensure your membership category remains accurate.
Can my category change as my company grows?
Yes.
As your organization scales, increases employee count, commercializes new technology, or changes its business model, your membership tier or category may evolve.
Membership is designed to reflect where your company is today and to support you as you grow.
