Webinar: Upskilling in Newfoundland and Labrador – An Oil and Gas Perspective
Heather Davis, Digitalization Project Execution Lead at Aker Solutions, will present on the Workforce Upskilling Study.
Newfoundland and Labrador has been identified as a region where the workforce numbers are in decline. The number of people of an age to potentially enter post-secondary training or newly join the workforce in this region are down roughly 43% since the mid 1980’s, and the number of people who are in their final years of high school are down 55% in the same timeframe. During this time, opportunities to work in tech-related jobs, and more recently, remote work opportunities, has lead to an increase in competition for resources in this region. This region is not alone, however, as industries around the world are looking towards technology to help close this gap.
Through previous study, Aker Solutions has highlighted the direct relationship between upskilling of resources and meeting the demands of the evolving industry through the integration of technology. This study was initiated as a further exploration into the topic of upskilling, to determine the current state of upskilling in the region and to highlight the importance of upskilling the workforce as we move into the future. This webinar will touch on the benefits and challenges of upskilling, while highlighting skills gaps in the workforce, and establish a proactive and strategic approach that ensures workers are equipped with the skills and competencies to thrive and support growth in the energy industry.
The research was funded by the Digital Oil and Gas Initiative – a partnership between Energy NL and techNL to spur collaboration and innovation to deliver local digital solutions to the Energy industry.
