About The Innovation Centre

The Innovation Centre (IC) is an innovation hub that fosters industry, business, and ecosystem collisions across multiple sectors. It is focused on fostering collaboration and technology growth to accelerate the development of the innovation-driven economy across the province. This trailblazing initiative was born out of the needs of the innovation community and broader ecosystem. It is directly supported by techNL, in partnership with Energy NL, Canada’s Ocean Supercluster (OSC), and Energy Research & Innovation Newfoundland & Labrador (ERINL) with support from many other companies, organizations, and volunteers.

The IC is opening in Spring 2024, in a newly renovated 54,143 sq ft building, strategically situated within a growing innovation district. The building is ideally located near the airport, with highway access, and many nearby industry partners. There is a large open parking lot, that is free for visitor use. The space itself is dedicated to cultivating innovative connections, collaborations, and co-creations, between industry and established & growing businesses through unique programming, access to special technology assets, proximity to other innovators, and as a demonstration space providing visibility. Job Summary

Reporting to the President of the Innovation Centre, the Business Operations Manager will lead operational excellence across the IC (the facility and the organization), promote data-driven decision-making, solve complex organizational problems and contribute to system and infrastructure enhancement.

The Innovation Centre Business Operations Manager oversees the holistic operation of the Innovation Centre, managing both its physical infrastructure and organizational functions. Responsible for oversight of facility maintenance, safety protocols, and sustainability initiatives, they ensure a conducive environment for innovation and productivity. Additionally, they develop and enforce operational policies and procedures, ensuring compliance with regulations and industry standards. Working with the President, they align operational goals with strategic plans, track performance metrics, and manage the Innovation Centre’s operational budget to ensure financial sustainability. Moreover, they prioritize member experience, offering tailored support services, optimizing booking platforms, and working with the Innovation Centre team to help foster community engagement through unique uses of the space for collaboration, events and networking opportunities, ultimately driving the Innovation Centre’s success as a hub for innovation and collaboration.

Role & Responsibilities

The successful candidate will have to manage the duality of the Innovation Centre as a facility and as an organization. This includes a wide variety of responsibilities that vary from facility management, operations, financial, and miscellaneous tasks. The role will be broken down into three core components: management of the Innovation Centre (as a Building/Facility) management of the Innovation Centre (as an organization), and management of member experience. The general responsibilities will be broken down in the following ways:

Management of the Innovation Centre (as a Building/Facility)

·       Facility Maintenance: Regularly inspect the external and internal premises to identify needs for repairs or improvements, ensuring the physical environment supports innovation and productivity. This will involve coordinating with our property management company and identifying next steps (e.g. sourcing contractors for renovations or updates to workspaces to foster collaboration and creativity). Work with tenants in the light industrial space to ensure new fit-ups are properly completed and executed in a way that works with the Innovation Centre’s requirements. Point of contact for future renovations/construction projects completed on site.

·       Safety and Security: Implement and oversee security protocols, including access control systems and emergency response plans, to ensure the safety of all occupants. Regularly review and update safety measures in response to current regulations and best practices. Ensure all plans & best practices are shared with members and easily accessible.

·       Internet/IT/AV: Work with the Innovation Centre’s managed network service provider to ensure all proper systems are in place and actively monitored to provide secure and consistent internet services. Create Innovation Centre specific internet/IT/AV policies and SOPs. Maintain and regularly audit internal needs (e.g. evaluations of IT systems and infrastructure enhancements and IT roadmap execution).

·       Sustainability Initiatives: Develop and implement sustainable practices within the building’s operations, such as energy-efficient lighting and various recycling programs, to minimize the environmental impact and align with the Innovation Centre’s commitment to sustainability.

Management of the Innovation Centre (as an organization)

·       Operational Policies, Procedures, and Compliance: Create, maintain and enhance internal business process documentation, including the development of IC specific policies and SOPs. Ensure staff, tenant/members and visitors are aligned in their approaches to managing safety, operational excellence, security considerations, and general IC standards, and adhering to all legal and industry requirements. This will include managing service provider contracts, ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations, and handling insurance policies. Evaluate Innovation Centre insurance coverage and maintain appropriate insurance coverage. Ensure Innovation Centre/tenant/member compliance with insurance policies and regulations. Optimize the Innovation Centre’s knowledge management systems, ensuring information is being stored and shared effectively. Minimize operational liabilities through appropriate risk management strategies.

·       Execution & Reporting on Operational Goals: Work with the President to ensure operational goals and strategies are aligned with the strategic plan & business plan for the Innovation Centre. This involves assessing current operations, identifying areas for improvement, and leading initiatives that contribute to long-term success. Includes enhancing systems, processes and practices to improve internal reporting on Key Performance Indicators (KPI). Gather KPI data and data-driven insights about the business, projects and programs, and prepare reports and insights for senior leadership and key stakeholders.

·       Financial Management: Oversee the IC’s operational budget, including tracking expenses, managing invoices, and preparing financial reports to ensure financial health and sustainability. Evaluate and implement cost-saving measures without compromising the quality of services provided.

Management of Member Experience

·       Member Services: Build strong internal relationships to ensure tenants and members feel supported. Offer support services tailored to the needs of tenants and members, such as IT support, shared office supplies, and access to meeting rooms, to ensure they can operate effectively and efficiently. Management and oversight of the booking/space platform- perform regular monitoring and evaluation of its usage. Development, implementation, and oversight of a member feedback process and the development, implementation, and oversight of an online service request system.

·       Visitor Experience: Work with Office Coordinator to ensure that visitors receive a positive first impression of the Innovation Centre through well-maintained common areas, clear signage, and a welcoming reception area. Implement feedback mechanisms to continuously improve the visitor experience.

·       Community Engagement: Work with the Innovation Centre team, to ensure the space is used effectively for public events and workshops that encourage networking and collaboration among tenants and members, enhancing the overall community experience within the Innovation Centre.


·       Bachelor’s degree in business administration, operations management, or a related field and/or equivalent experience.

·       5+ years of experience in a similar role in a continuous improvement environment (e.g. building manager, operations manager, facilities management, etc).

·       Experience working with service providers and managing service-related contracts.

·       Experience working with Hubspot, and Microsoft Office products including Sharepoint, Teams, Power BI, and other applications that support business automation and operational excellence.

·       A track record of driving operational excellence, efficiencies, and improvements to business processes.

·       Experience working with cross-functional teams and a deep understanding of operational business processes.

·       Comfortable leading discussions, being in front of a crowd, and conducting tours of the IC.

·       A proven agile, innovative, strategic thinker, and a self-starter.

·       Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
