SmartICE seeks a Grant Writer (Open to full time or part time work, this is a one year contract) reporting to the Project Portfolio Manager. This role is crucial for the organization’s sustainability and growth, involving identifying funding gaps, researching opportunities, and leading funding application preparation. The Grant Writer serves as the main contact for proposal development, focusing on long-term sustainability, strategic partnerships, and data-driven impact assessment across initiatives.

SmartICE is an award-winning technological innovation for the North. SmartICE offers a suite of climate change adaptation tools that integrate Indigenous and local knowledge of ice with advanced data acquisition, remote monitoring and satellite mapping for ice travel safety. Our community-based services provide invaluable, data-driven insights into ice thickness and local ice travel conditions, in near real-time.

What you will be doing

Grant Writing and Proposal Development

  • Research potential funding opportunities from government, foundations, and private entities.
  • Develop and write grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and supporting documents.
  • Collaborate with staff to gather necessary information and align projects with funding criteria.
  • Ensure all applications comply with funder guidelines and deadlines.
  • Assist in developing project budgets for applications.
  • Maintain records of grant applications, submissions, and follow-up activities.
  • Manage a database of proposals in progress.
  • Compile resources and develop templates for effective proposal development.

Funding Strategy and Research

  • Participate in developing and executing a comprehensive funding strategy for organizational growth.
  • Monitor philanthropic trends to identify new funding opportunities.
  • Conduct research on potential funders and their priorities.
  • Build relationships with funders and stakeholders to enhance visibility and funding prospects.
  • Engage with program leads to perform gap analysis and create fund development plans with the executive team.

What you will bring

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • Strong writing and grant writing skills.
  • Excellent research abilities.
  • Strategic thinker with great communication and collaboration skills.
  • Experience in rural, remote, or Indigenous communities preferred.
  • Familiarity with government funding opportunities valued.
  • Fund development experience in nonprofit or social enterprise sectors is a plus.
  • Able to work in a fast-paced team and independently.
  • Proven community engagement and decision-making skills.
  • Proficient in English; French and/or Indigenous language skills are an asset.
  • Ability to meet tight deadlines.
